I was thinking about what I should write for 2 months, finally, I have determined.
Now I will tell you a case, envisage it please and think about how you will react in this case.
You come to the class, you are ready for lecturing but your student is talking to each other.
This means that your student isn't ready for listening!!!
In such situations, you will either be very angry and use your authority, or you will look for effective ways to make your students ready for class.
Being angry or shouting will be effective in a short time, but this behavior(talking) will repeat. In addition, the students who are ready for the lesson may feel uncomfortable because of your aggressive behavior, and you may lose their interest in the lesson.
What should we do? How should we behave?
Stay calm and wait.
Yes, you should wait. Your students may be opening their books and asking each other what page they should open. They may not realize you are in class. But you can not wait for them along the lesson, just wait 2-3 minutes quietly. Probably students who notice you will invite silence each other.
If this does not work, try to warn them with classroom equipment.
Turn the lights on and off.
Hit student row.
Clap your hand.
They will work!
Let's say you are teaching and the students are talking between themselves.
Do not stop lecturing and don't shout! You should continue your lecture and find students who are the source of the voice. Go straight to the speaking students and touch their desk lightly without disturbing other students.
You shouldn't play detective role, please. When you are trying to find the source of the voice, your students may perceive it as a game. If you are writing a text, stop writing, turn your body so that you can see everybody in class, make eye contact with the whole class, using body language effectively is very important.
Also, intervening in the disruptive talk in the right time, you can prevent the student's offer of being off task for the other students.
